MANAGING THE UK ROAD NETWORK WITH LESS PUBLIC FUNDS

30TH JUNE 2010

OVERVIEW

The delivery of future road strategies is now a highly challenging prospect given the next decade is to be one of austerity. As spending cuts really start to bite, industry is going to have to 'sweat its assets' and adopt a more intense focus than ever before on generating greater efficiencies through innovation, partnership and technology.

Realpolitik may also force the return of contentious policies like road pricing and road privatisation that both generate too attractive a level of funding to be ignored in these leaner times. Lorry Road User Charging is already working its way back to the political agenda of the new Government and support for the idea of privatising motorways has also been publicly mooted by new Ministers.

With future roads policy having to be set in such a different economic environment, a national strategy for roads is being called for by roads professionals.

At this one-day event, we will be discussing a way forward for those with the difficult task of having to improve the UK road network with less public funds.
